From Friend to Friend
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So
looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So
one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll stay.
I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again. |

Berkley Easton
September
28, 2002 - November 16, 2010
It is with great sadness that we lost a member of our family
today! We found out three months ago that Berkley had
lymphoma. The vet said he had weeks to live. We put him on a
medication so he wouldn't suffer but the last couple of
weeks his health has been declining. It was time!
He has been the greatest friend and companion to Cory &
I and a gentle big brother to Alexis. He was our baby before
we were able to have Alexis. He cuddled with us when were
were sad....he would warm up our feet on cold nights...he
would give "high-fives" and roll over for treats. He was
such a good boy!!! We will miss him and love him forever!
Rest in peace....Berkley boy!!! XOXO

Yesterday, I PTS my Lab/Border Collie boy Hercules, aka
Herkie.
Herkie was
my only dog from a 6 week old pup ... found him wandering at
night alone on the road. He would have been 14 on Nov 1st. I
was treating him for Cushings (and thyroid) for years. I
tried everything for the past few weeks, but vets said his
symptoms were of a "sinister complicated ugly disease" (he
bloated up with fluid outside of lungs compromising his
breathing, then his abdomen filled).
Herkie was my "tall dark
handsome guy". He went through so many phases of my life
with me and was my last link to my happy years raising my
sons. He is my fourth dog I've lost in 18 months. In his
photo, he is 'letting it all hang out' ... he was so laid
back...not a mean bone in him.
Rest in
peace my tall, dark handsome guy...I will never forget you.

dog who has given his heart and soul to his family and then
lost his home." - Annie Simon |

Rusty
was a joy, a challenge, a terror, a ‘good big brother’ and
an awesome squirrel hunter. Typical of the Pomeranian
breed, he was affectionate, playful and extremely
intelligent – enough so that he challenged me for most of
his fourteen years for the pack leader position.
Prior to
being diagnosed with lymphoma two months ago, he loved his
walks three times a day during which he displayed his
wonderful and proud gait and liked nothing better than
rolling on a ‘snail trail’ – body wiggling, all ‘fours’ in
the air and a big goofy smile on his little face.
His
passing has left a hole in our lives and the lives of Jessie
& Tucker. We will always remember our little ‘Rustyfarian’
with much love. ~ Debbie |

I have a hard time writing
about Barney, just days since we lost him, a big void to
fill. He was a kind, gentle soul, but also a fierce and
loyal protector (as stated to me by many a Purolator, UPS
and Hydro guy - although Hydro always managed to make it to
the meter and send us the bill).
We've
been so lucky with the critters that have come into our
house and especially lucky with Barney, who we feel very
privileged to have had in our lives.
The photos are of Summer Barney and Winter Barney...(note
how the tongue does not fit inside the head and as
consequence there was often some slobber-doggie to wipe up
off the floor :) Barney would never lie down - he would stop
where he was and drop, causing the floor around you to
shake.
Barney trained us to put the remote controls away and not to
leave sandwiches and hamburgers unattended on the counter.
He would ensure that no food would go to waste. He also
pre-cleaned all dishes before they went into the dishwasher.
Barney
was at the window when you left left and when you came home.
He'd follow you anywhere. He was great with kids and other
dogs and anywhere he went, he always seemed to draw admirers
- especially children.
It did not matter what type of day you had at work, how
cranky you were when you got home - Barney was there to
greet you and walk beside you, with his head pressed against
your leg. Barney was the true definition of unconditional
love.
For the love of Barney...rest in peace sweet boy.

In
loving memory of Esther
She was a red Pomeranian. She was born in May and lived to
be 15 years old. She was a faithful loving pet all those
years and remained the beautiful red colour all her life.
She had congestive heart failure and was on several
medications for the last approx year and 1/2. She was the
alpha dog right to the very end and would let our Schnauzer
and two cats know who was boss. I have fond memories of her
as a puppy growing up with our son Devan who is now 22. I
miss her very much and look forward to seeing her again in
heaven. Please put 100 dollars for a donation in her memory
my card.

Into Loving Arms – Sadie’s Story:
How HART got its Beginnings
When Sadie was dumped outside of Bancroft in the
summer of 1994 her journey was about to change the
lives of thousands of animals in the area. Delivered
to Madeleine Marentette on the grounds of what would
become Grail Springs, Sadie was welcomed into the
loving arms of her new family.
Sadie was so malnourished she was terribly
underweight, dehydrated, and missing some of her
fur, but she sat in the middle of the road that
summer morning until a gardener on her way to work,
stopped to give Sadie a lift and a new life.
Madeleine started calling around trying to find
Sadie’s owner but instead of finding the individual
responsible for this poor creature, she found a
community that was lacking resources when it came to
dealing with abandoned and abused animals.
Madeleine kept Sadie and with the help of local vets
and residents with big hearts, they formed Highlands
Animal Relief Team (H.A.R.T.) and in their first
full year they rescued and found homes for over 1000
animals.
Sadie had a full and loving life at Grail Springs
where she welcomed guests and had a gentle way of
reaching out to those who needed her the most. With
her dark eyes and her soft fur she could make
anyone, no matter how lost in life, feel comforted.
Sadie, like many abandoned animals, had an innate
understanding that her life was much better than it
could have been and when Sadie passed away last
month we all felt such a profound loss.
Sadie was a gift to us because she represents what a
second chance is all about and when life ditches you
in the middle of the road to your future, have faith
and someone kind and gentle will open their door to
you.
Thank you Sadie for your gifts and for inspiring the
start of HART, a valued organization dedicated to
the care and welfare of animals in need.

Mia was
rescued by HART, from Quinte SPCA.
Within 24 hours she
showed our foster family, that not only was she very
well mannered, but also determined to “save us” all from
drowning. Her determination to bring us back to shore
when we were swimming was comical. In a few days her
strength returned and her muscles started to sing with
"puppy song." This was no “old dog” as the pound had
described, but a young girl (31/2 years), full of
energy, happy and very loyal. Her relentless retrieving
of sticks, balls, ropes, and kids from the lake was a
sight to behold. Watching her made our hearts soar.
Sadly on August 19th
after complications developed following a routine spay,
Mama Mia passed away. Heroic efforts by Dr. Ann Rankin
and her assistant Kim, Algonquin East Animal Clinic,
were futile and Mia's heart failed. Post mortem
investigation revealed the possibility of a hidden
congenital defect or rat poison ingested weeks ago
(possibly during her stay at Quinte), as the likely
cause of death.
Mia was with us for 3
weeks. In that time she blossomed into the amazing dog
she must have been, before she became a stray in
Belleville. Our time was filled with action packed,
doggy fun with a foster family that loved her dearly.
We will miss you Mama
Mia and will think of you often. Our efforts to save a
life, even when only for a short time, will continue.
You are an example of the great joy that HART brings to
so many beings; human and canine alike.
--- Cheryl, HART "foster" volunteer.

Sterling -
In Memoriam of Sterling, a
mini-schnauzer found tied to a tree. He could not alert
anyone to his peril because someone had "wired" his jaws
closed before tying him up. He was rescued and loved
for only a short four months before illness took him away.
HART's condolences to Ashley, Doug and Loki who held
Sterling in their loving embrace.
