Foster Guardian Volunteers are the backbone of an
animal rescue organization.
Volunteer "foster guardians" are required to have ample time
at home to care for a HART "foster" dog, as they would their
very own. While HART pays expenses for food/vet
care/equipment, the foster guardian family works to
socialize the dog, including housebreaking, daily walks,
leash/crate training, basic obedience. Our foster guardians
also facilitate travel to and from vet appointments.
All dogs are vaccinated/dewormed/deflea-ed, before entering
a new foster home. Spay/neuter surgery is scheduled, as soon
as possible. Volunteer coordinators are on hand to assist
with advice for specific training issues.
When the dogs medical/behavioural needs are met, pictures
are taken for posting on the HART website, to promote
applications for adoptions. All applicants are thoroughly
"screened" by volunteer coordinators, including written
application (posted for convenience on the HARTsite)/telephone
interviews/vet and personal reference checks/Home Visit.
Once an application is approved, specific foster
guardians are provided applicant contact information to
arrange visitation and adoption. An adoption donation is
paid to HART, to replenish funds needed to care for the next
"incoming" dog.
It can be a tough job, to love a dog as your own and then
pass him/her on to a new home. This is made possible by
HARTs thorough screening process, excellent adoptive
families often travelling to meet their adoptive dogs, from
all over Ontario or local homes. To know your dog will be
cared for by a family as invested in rescue as you are is a
good feeling and a very validating experience. And as your
dog moves on in her rescue journey to her new home, you once
again have space for a needy animal in your foster guardian
home.
All prospective adopters are required to comply with the
screening process, no exceptions made for family and
friends, beyond your personal reference.
If you are interested in becoming a HART "foster guardian,"
please contact us by email/phone and a Foster Application
will be forwarded to you by email. Upon review, a Home Visit
will be scheduled to interview you and your family
personally.
Not everyone is in a position to foster rescued dogs but
there are many ways to assist and support your local rescue
organization. Cash donations generate a tax receipt. Gently
used items can be donated for our fundraising yard sale. Volunteers
are always needed for transports, fundraising events,
crafting, bookkeeping, data keeping, mailing workshops,
etc...
Thank you for considering volunteering to HART! It is the
selfless work of devoted volunteers that make HARTs work an
ongoing, significant advocate and resource for our
voiceless, four legged friends.
